Textbook: H. Stephen Stoker, "Organic and Biological Chemistry", 6th Edition, Brooks/Cole; Chapters 1-11 (but not Chapter 10). Lectures will follow the topic sequence in the text quite closely; topics in the chapters not covered are "assigned reading" and subject to examination.

Course Content: Chemistry 2440 covers the topics of introductory organic chemistry which are directly related to, and absolutely necessary to understand, life processes. Chapters 7-11 in particular cover "biological chemistry", topics that are not extensively covered in our traditional courses. Consequently, many of the traditional topics of organic chemistry are omitted or covered at a very elementary level. The text is very descriptive so lectures will contain additional material explaining how and why the reactions occur. Quizzes and examinations will include questions on such material.
With 13 weeks to cover 11 chapters of the text book, allowing for the time devoted to quizzes, that means a chapter per week. Material builds up very rapidly so your attendance at classes and regular study and review are critical to your success in the course. It is also vital that you do problems in the textbook at the end of each chapter to test your knowledge and for practice answering questions.
Laboratories: Attendance at and successful completion of the laboratories is mandatory! Besides they are fun! You will learn practical laboratory skills while measuring properties of, and doing reactions with materials of biological interest. Labs take place in C4031 on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday starting Friday, Sep. 5. You will need to bring a printed copy of Experiment 1 from D2L, safety glasses, a laboratory coat and loose leaf to record raw data.
