Welcome to Chemistry 1050. Dr. Kozak's lectures are in slot 02
Mon., Tues., Wed., & Fri. at 9:00 am in room C3033

The resource room will hold a review session on Monday Dec. 5th from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm in room SN2019. You may download the review questions from the departmental Chem 1050 page.
The final exam will be held on Wednesday, December 7th from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. in PE2000.
Bring your student ID to the examination and show up early!

The textbook for the course is General Chemistry 10th Ed. by Petrucci, Herring, Madura and Bissonnette.
The book and lab manual are available in the MUN Bookstore.
Labs for Chem 1050 start on Monday Sept. 12th.

You may use the 9th edition of the text for this course, however, you will be required to purchase an access code for Mastering Chemistry ($50 from the bookstore or from www.masteringchemistry.com)
The Mastering Chemistry Course Code for my section is CHEM1050CMK2011

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MASTERING CHEMISTRY ACCESS CAN BE FOUND HERE.

Copies of any handouts given in class will be posted here, as well as lecture slides.
Remember that these slides are only the basic highlights from the textbook
and are only intended to help you make your own notes.
If you try to study from these slides alone, you will be disappointed!

You should use them as "point form" notes of the lectures, where you will add your own notes to help explain what is being presented in the lectures
and what you read in the textbook
.

The Learning Objectives describe what you should know after each Chapter has been covered in class and studied by you.
Consider them a "checklist" of topics and skills you need to learn.
Remember: University is about self-directed learning!

For extra help with this course, visit the Chemistry Resource Room, Room C2012, Phone 864-8085 Hours, Monday to Friday, 9 am - 5 pm.

Office Hours (in Room C2018):    Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 pm

We will be covering material in Chapters 6-13. Material in Chapters 1 to 5 will NOT be reviewed in class. Full details of the sections covered are given in the Chem 1050 curriculum (
see Departmental Chem 1050 Course Pages).

Chapters 1 to 5 are a review of material covered in your High School chemistry classes. The course lectures begin with Chapter 6, however, the material in Chapter 6 and in all subsequent Chapters relies VERY HEAVILY on the material in Chapters 1 to 5.

It is vitally important that you review Chapters 1 to 5 before the start of term. Summary slides of these chapters are given below. You are STRONGLY ADVISED TO READ THEM IN THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF LECTURES!

Here is the course outline. This includes useful information like the dates of the term tests.

Here are the PowerPoint slides in PDF format:

Learning objectives will be provided for each part of the course. Learning objectives will help you assess your progress throughout the course and whether you have obtained a good grasp on all the concepts presented to you. As a lot of material is being covered in a short space of time, I think you will find these very useful, especially when it comes  time to revise for the term tests and the exam. More learning objectives will be added here as the semester progresses:

Learning Objectives - Chapter 6

Learning Objectives - Chapter 7
Learning Objectives - Chapter 8
Learning Objectives - Chapter 9
Learning Objectives - Chapter 10
Learning Objectives - Chapter 11
Learning Objectives - Chapter 12
Learning Objectives - Chapter 13

Worksheets (sample problems) for you to try and Assignments are available here:
Remember, Worksheets are NOT to be handed in for marks. They are only meant to help you practice the material.
Additional tips for these topics can be found here.

Worksheets for Chem 1050 can now be found here

Assignments from 2009 are available here for extra practice only! Assignments for Fall 2011 are all via Mastering Chemistry:

Assignment 3
Assignment 3 Solutions

Solutions to Practice Problems

Molecular Orbital Diagram Solutions
Note: The MO diagram for CO given in Petrucci et al. (both the 8th and 9th editions) in Chapter 11-5 is INCORRECT. The text suggests that CO does not exhibit s-p mixing. They are being mischievous monkeys!
The true MO diagram exhibits s-p mixing. The MO diagrams for CO and NO provided to you in the lecture notes and problems (immediately above) are the correct ones.
The diagram (Figure 11-27) in the 10th edition is correct.

Chapter 12 and 13 Problems This was an assigment from 2008. Do not hand this in! It will not be marked and the info. regarding exams is from LAST YEAR. Solutions to these problems are given below.
Solutions to Chapter 12 and 13 Problems

The solutions to Quizzes and Tests will be posted here over the course of the semester:
